It has to do with “Hit Man,” a comedy Powell co-wrote with the director Richard Linklater that casts him as a hapless teacher who must pose as an assassin for hire. I first saw it at the Venice Film Festival in September, where it proved so crowd-pleasing that the audience broke into applause midway through the movie. A week later at the Toronto International Film Festival, the response was also through the roof. But for months, Powell had only heard about all that secondhand. Since the Screen Actors Guild strike was still going strong during the fall tests, Powell wasn’t able to attend a premiere of “Hit Man” until it played Monday night at the Sundance Film Festival.

Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck remember the feeling of being the new kids at the Sundance Film Festival. “I remember being like, oh my God, this festival has been around 20 years, it’s such an old festival,” Boden said in a recent interview with The Associated Press. Their new film debuts Thursday, opening night of the 40th edition of the festival, at the storied Eccles Theater. “My favorite films are Sundance films,” Kaphar said. “That is really nourishing in a year when we’re acknowledging and marking this 40th edition of Sundance.”The Sundance Film Festival runs from Jan. 18 through Jan. 28.

MARRAKECH, Morocco (AP) — International movie stars arrive in Morocco on Friday to kick off one of the Arab world's largest film festivals amid a shadow cast by Israel’s latest war with Hamas and protests that have swept the region for almost two months. The Marrakech International Film Festival, along with Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea Film Festival that is scheduled to open next week, are taking place despite war in Gaza. That’s in contrast to the Cairo International Film Festival and Tunisia’s Carthage Film Festival, both of which were canceled due to the war. Scorsese will preside over the festival's Atlas Workshops — an initiative designed to screen films or films in progress by emerging Arab and Moroccan filmmakers. The festival is scheduled to run through Dec. 2.

Streamers increasingly are leaning into true crime and stories about the heartland, and Texas Monthly can check those boxes. Of the publication's 50 film and TV projects, half fall into the true crime genre. "They're trying to reach the middle of the country, and we've got things that do that," Scott Brown, Texas Monthly's president, told Insider. Texas Monthly also has a first-look deal with Warner Bros. Sarah Aubrey, head of original content at Max (and an Austin native), told Insider Texas Monthly has an "uncanny ability" to identify not only gripping true crime but also cultural stories with unforgettable characters.

Netflix has acquired Richard Linklater's “Hit Man,” starring Glen Powell, for $20 million. “Hit Man,” which Linklater and Powell co-wrote, stars the “Top Gun: Maverick” actor as a New Orleans psychology professor who also works undercover posing as a hit man for the police in sting operations to catch would-be murders. Netflix didn't announce release plans yet for “Hit Man,” which also played at the Venice Film Festival. But the “Hit Man” sale is the largest yet of the season. Netflix, which also distributed Linklater's previous movie, “Apollo 10 1/2,” earlier acquired Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut, “Woman of the Hour,” following its premiere in Toronto.

Teresa Taylor, a drummer for the Texas acid-punk band Butthole Surfers who became an emblem of Generation X aimlessness and anomie with a memorable appearance in Richard Linklater’s 1990 film “Slacker,” died on Sunday. She was 60. Her death was announced on Monday in a Twitter post by the band. The cause was lung disease. Cheryl Curtice, her partner and caregiver, wrote on Facebook that Ms. Taylor “passed away clean and sober, peacefully in her sleep, this weekend.”“She was so brave, even in the face of her horrible disease.”Ms. Taylor, also known as Teresa Nervosa, addressed her long battle with what she called an “end stage” lung condition, which she did not identify, in a 2021 Facebook post.
